The objective of this study is to compare the diagnostic accuracy of the calprotectin lateral flow point-of-care (POC) test in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) patients to diagnose infection using 3 different sets of criteria: (1) 2013 Musculoskeletal Infection Society, (2) 2 … (read more)

The diagnostic criteria of prosthetic joint infection (PJI) recommended by the most commonly used diagnostic algorithms can be obscured or distorted by other inflammatory processes or aseptic pathology. Furthermore, the most reliable diagnostic criteria are garnered during revision surgery. A robust, reliable addition to the preoperative diagnostic cascade is warranted. Calprotectin has been shown to be an excellent diagnostic marker for PJI. In this study, we aimed to … (read more)

Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is one of the main reasons for revision surgery after primary unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA), total knee arthroplasty (TKA) or total hip arthroplasty (THA). Currently the MSIS and EBJIS criteria sets are considered to be the gold standards in determining PJI. These criteria sets are complex and contain tests that are time-consuming and many are rather costly. Therefore, further research is indicated to find a simpler but equally reliable diagnostic test. In this study we evaluated the additional value of calprotectine measurement in synovial fluid in patients undergoing hip and knee (revision) arthroplasty following routine work-up. …(read more)

Pre-operative definitive diagnosis of infection in painful total hip arthroplasty (THA) is not always easy to be established, making the intra-operative decision-making process crucial in management of revision hip surgery. Calprotectin is a promising point-of-care novel biomarker that has displayed high accuracy … (read more)

Diagnosing periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) after megaprosthetic reconstruction may be difficult due to altered inflammatory responses, extensive prior surgery, and the limited performance of conventional criteria such as the 2018 ICM score. Synovial calprotectin is a rapid neutrophil-derived biomarker that may improve diagnostic accuracy in this challenging setting. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of synovial calprotectin in detecting periprosthetic infection in patients treated with tumor megaprostheses; secondary aims included comparison with ICM classification, assessment in infection classification-inconclusive cases, and exploratory performance in patients with low CRP. … (read more)

Diagnosing periprosthetic joint infections (PJI) are challenging and may be hampered by the presence of other causes of local inflammation. Recently, several synovial biomarkers have been introduced into the algorithm for the diagnosis of a PJI. Calprotectin is a protein that is present in the cytoplasm of neutrophils, is released upon neutrophil activation, and exhibits antimicrobial activity. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate calprotectin as a promising biomarker for the diagnosis of PJIs. … (read more)

Diagnosis of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) after total knee arthroplasty remains challenging when standard criteria are inconclusive. This study evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of synovial calprotectin and its prespecified exploratory adjunctive value to preoperative 2018 International Consensus Meeting (ICM) classification. … (read more)

Purpose: Diagnosing periprosthetic joint infections (PJI) are challenging and may be hampered by the presence of other causes of local inflammation. Conventional synovial and serum markers are not reliable under these circumstances. Synovial calprotectin has been recently shown as a promising biomarker for PJI in total hip (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The aim of this study is to … (read more)

Kingella kingae is a bacteria involved in developing arthritis in children. Its diagnosis remains difficult. We report a case for which a new biomarker, calprotectin measured in the synovial fluid, was strongly positive and a specific molecular test was … (read more)

Background/aim: Synovial calprotectin has been demonstrated as a promising biomarker for periprosthetic joint infections (PJI) in painful total hip (THA) and knee arthroplasties (TKA). However, its diagnostic utility has not been evaluated explicitly in cases with marked loosening or migration of the implant. Concerns have already been raised in cases … (read more)

Background: Despite several synovial fluid biomarkers for the diagnosis of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) having been investigated, point-of-care (POC) tests using these biomarkers are not widely available. Synovial calprotectin has recently been reported to effectively exclude the diagnosis of PJI. Thus, the objective of this study was to … (read more)

Objectives: Several studies have demonstrated that synovial calprotectin is a highly accurate biomarker in diagnosing periprosthetic joint infections (PJI). Assuring reliability is of great importance and coincides with adequate preanalytical handling. This study focuses on … (read more)

Aims: This pilot study tested the performance of a rapid assay for diagnosing prosthetic joint infection (PJI), which measures synovial fluid calprotectin from total hip and knee revision patients. Methods: A convenience series of 69 synovial fluid samples from revision patients at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital were collected … (read more)

The diagnosis of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) requires a combination of various clinical, laboratory, microbiological and histopathological parameters. A concomitant periprosthetic fracture (PPF) further complicates the diagnosis as it causes a confounding local inflammatory response. Synovial calprotectin has been demonstrated … (read more)
